Google Reader will be dead in July 2013

15. März 2013

Yesterday morning i got suprised by a „welcome“ message after logging in into Google Reader News Feed app. This one liner just stated that GOOGLE READER will be discontinued after July 2013. Thats just bad! Googles news feed collector/portal was my startup every monring to get concentrated news at one view at my PC. But not only this, even on my Android i used an news reader which just interconnected to the Google Reader to get the news. The advandtage was: it was a synced environment and on all my devices (PC, laptop, phone) i had automatically the same status on new news, read news, marked news…

The main reason i assume is that Google is not really be able to get much money out of this application. The told at their statement that the need to focus on core applications and Reader is not one of this set of apps. Furthermore Google stated that Reader had an descrease in number of users.

So now what?! Well, Googles is actually helping out a little bit by having a page setup with information to alternative news readers and aggregators. Google also provides a tool to export feeds and surrounding information into XML so that you can easily import into anther feed reader.

For the moment I’m experimenting with Feed+ on Android, but this is a standalone reader without sync capabilities. Well, some time is left until July and I assume there will be some app developer who will now jump on and extend their solutions to be synced over multiple devices.

I just can hope that GMAIL will not get decreasing numbers of users so that they kill this service as well ;-) …just a joke!

Finally its all about making money – even for Google.
