LAN = WAN ? Bad things in globalization

6. Oktober 2006

IT is always and anywhere available, especially the network is always around. Thats what most of the people think and also feel. Technologies like DSL, UMTS, WIMAX, WLAN, METRONETand LAN generate that feeling for most of the people today. Thats why nobody (like application people) think about the basic network infrastructure which keeps their bits running during their application design phase.  As a result very often the app guys show up at the networkers desk and ask „Why is it to slow to get my application and file servers all over the world synchronized?“. Answer: Thats why: they are placed all over the world and LAN != WAN in bandwidth and latency. Your packets need time to travel from Europe to Asia and to US and that really influence the speed of transfer you feel. Even if you have a really fat budget to buy 100Mbps MPLS links, you will get trouble transfering high speed over WAN, because of TCP and also SSH internal flow control mechanisms. This topic will tell you some interesting facts what you can do to get your WAN pipes filled up to the limit and get the maximum bandwidth for you app guys… updates coming soon.
